According to a statement from the Niger army, troops rescued nearly 100 migrants in the Sahara Desert. The group, which included women and children, were left without water and food. Migrants are often crammed into pick-up trucks, with very little or no sustenance, to cross the arid desert. Over 40 people died of thirst in the Sahara Desert two weeks ago when transportation failed. Last June, the bodies of 34 migrants – including 20 children – were recovered near the Niger-Algeria border. Niger serves as a transit point for West Africans hoping to reach Europe.
