Canadians are checking out of the workforce in near record numbers. The latest Statistics Canada numbers confirm that — despite a slight rise in May to 64.8 per cent from 64.6 per cent — the Labour Force Participation Rate in Canada is near a 10-year record low. Many Canadians are simply leaving the workforce. The state of Canada’s unemployed is trending downward — and that should be a wake-up call for all of us. The unemployed are stuck and they feel left out. It affects our labour markets today and our growth prospects for tomorrow. This negative trend should concern us all.
